Basic email netiquette

Please remember some basic netiquette when sending formal emails to university staff - email can be an official document requiring more care than an SMS to one of your friends.

Professors and employers will note how well you write your emails.

Please include a subject line for every email.
Sentences start with a capital letter and end in a full stop.
"You" is not spelled "u".
"I" is always the capital letter "I", never "i".
Start with a greeting "Dear Prof Jones", and end with your name "Regards, John Smith". For official university emails, please include your student number.
Proof check (spell check) your email before you send it.

Student Email

The University supplies all students with a free email account which can be accessed via http://www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/SydneyMail/.

Students should check their university supplied email account regularly, as many staff in the school may use email to communicate important information to you. Alternatively, you can configure your university email account to automatically forward all email to another address of your choice.

Configure SydneyMail to show your name correctly

You may have noticed when you use SydneyMail that the recipient may receive the message as follows:

From: abcd1234@uni.sydney.edu.au

without actually giving your full name.

Configuring SydneyMail email to put your name in the "from" field by doing the following:

Login to SydneyMail
Go to Account Information by clicking Options then click Account, and then, in the Account Information box, click Edit.
When you finish adding or updating information, click Save.
