Student Email
The University supplies all students with a free email account which can be accessed via https://www-mail.usyd.edu.au/. Students should check their university supplied email account regularly, as many staff in the school may use email to communicate important information to you. Alternatively, you can configure your university email account to automatically forward all email to another address of your choice.
Students are responsible for reading their email regularly.
How to configure your university email account
You may have noticed when you use the web based USyd email facility that the recipient may receive the message as follows:
From: abcd1234@mail.usyd.edu.au
without actually giving your full name.

This is not particularly helpful for the recipient, especially if you are sending a message to a Professor or sending a job application. Also, many spam filters detect messages without a real name as spam, particularly if no subject is given.
You can easily configure the USyd email to give your name as well, by changing the options of your USyd email account, select "default identity" from the drop down box, then put in your name in the appropriate box. Also check the box at the bottom that says "save sent-mail" and press the "Change" button to save these changes. See the screen shot below.
(Alternatively after you have logged onto your uni email, click the "options" button, then select "personal information", then "edit identities", and select "default identity" from the drop down box)
This makes any correspondence you may have with your lecturers or friends much easier!

Since an email address like abcd1234@mail.usyd.edu.au is hard to remember, you can set up an alias for yourself at the ITAssist email alias change page.
If you dont like using the USyd email account, then you can arrange to forward your email to another account of your choice via ITAssist Email forwarding page Remember though that the uni is not responsible if you forward your email to another account and you miss an important uni email because your own account does not work.
