Electives
1st Year
- For students enrolled in Civil Engineering there are no electives
- For students enrolled in Flexible 1st year one elective subject must be chosen. If you are expecting to move into Civil Engineering then it would sensible to choose GEOL1501 Engineering Geology. However, you are free to choose any elective.
2nd year
- Students who enrolled in flexible first year that didn’t take Engineering Geology as their elective in 1st year must enrol in GEOL1501 Engineering Geology
- Students who have completed GEOL1501 have a “Free Elective”. This can be taken from anywhere in the University provided that you meet pre-requisite requirements. (UOS outside the Engineering Faculty require approval of School Director of Learning and Teaching, A/Prof David Airey). For students wishing to pursue careers in Civil Engineering we recommend either:
a. CIVL2511 Instrumentation and Measurement in Civil Engineering, or
b. MATH2065 for students who like Mathematics - Students who have obtained Distinction average in 1st year may be invited to take Advanced Engineering ENGG2062
3rd Year
Students have to select three UoS in 2nd semester from the following:
- CIVL3235 Structural Analysis
- CIVL3411 Foundation Engineering
- CIVL3613 Ocean & Coastal Engineering
- CIVL3805 Project Scope, Cost & Time Management
4th year
Students have to select 3 UOS from the following table. 2 of the elective UOS must be from the same stream.
| Structural Stream | Geotechnical Stream | Environmental Stream | Construction Management Stream |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIVL4240 Concrete Structures 2 CIVL4241 Steel Structures 2 CIVL4414 Finite Element Analysis |
CIVL4413 Environmental Geotechnics CIVL4412 Geotechnical Engineering CIVL4414 Finite Element Analysis |
CIVL4413 Environmental Geotechnics CIVL4614 Flow-Induced Vibrations CIVL4615 Water Resources and Hydrology |
CIVL3813 Contracts formulation & Management CIVL4810 Management of People, Quality and Risk in Management Environments CIVL4814 Project planning & tendering CIVL4815 Project Formulation |
Free Electives
The standard BE (Civil) degree consists of 144 core credit points, 18 credit points of 3rd year elective and 18 credit points of 4th year electives. This leaves 12 credit points for "free electives".
The first 6 credit points are usually taken in year 2 semester 2 (see above).
The second 6 credit points are usually taken in 4th year, and they may be either a civil engineering subject or a non civil engineering subject.
The following conditions apply for the free electives.
- The level of the unit of study is appropriate (eg students would not normally be permitted to do a 3rd year unit of study in the 2nd year elective spot)
- You fulfill any of the prerequisites for that unit of study
- The content is mutually exclusive from other civil engineering subjects (eg you could not do an introductory MATLAB course, because this was already covered in ENGG1801).
- If the unit of study is on the Approved elective list, please contact Undergraduate Administrative Assistant, Cynthia Papangelis to arrange the enrolment
- If the unit of study is not on the Approved elective list, you need to get permission from David Airey, the School Director of Learning and Teaching.
